Connecticut Saw & Tool services the needs of wood, wood composite, solid surface, plastic, and non ferrous metal processing industries. Our primary focus is on businesses engaged in architectural millwork, commercial cabinetry, and display and store fixture manufacturing, however our expansive experience has involved us in providing cutting tools to a wide range of diverse companies and industries.

Connecticut Saw & Tool is a family owned and operated business. The majority of our employees have been with us for 10, 20, or 30+ years. We take great pride in the products and services that we provide our customers and do our best to show this pride through the way we do business.

Expanding Service Area

From our main location in Stratford, Connecticut we offer on site sales, technical service and tool sharpening pickup and delivery throughout the Northeast.

A large portion of our business comes from outside of our physical territory and on a daily basis we are shipping standard in stock products and custom made tools across the country and internationally. Additionally we receive many items for our sharpening service via UPS, Fedex and USPS and work closely with our customers to ensure that the entire process is easy, fast and cost effective.

Our History

  • 1900

    Family Origins

    Connecticut Saw & Tool dates back beyond memory to a small village in the Val Rendena Valley in the Austro-Italian Alps where the Povinelli family originated.

  • 1910

    Carisolo, Italy

    Nestled in the towering Alps, the village of Carisolo lies near the border of Italy and Austria and is influenced by both Germanic and Italian cultures.

  • 1915

    Artisan Culture

    Sharpening was the village craft in Carisolo. A monument to the artisans who carried their trade throughout the world stands in the town square.

  • 1928

    Next Generation Artisans

    Henry, or Heinrich, Povinelli was the first Povinelli in his line to carry his trade to America. Unfortunately, he was hit and killed by a trolley in Indianapolis in 1917. In the next generation, Nick Povinelli moved the business to Connecticut after his father’s death. Nick Povinelli is seen in this 1928 shop photo with sister-in-law Caroline Vivo.

  • 1973

    Business Expansion

    Third- and fourth-generation craftsmen Lando Povinelli and Jim Povinelli (L-R in 1973 photo) maintained high standards of craftsmanship while continuing expansion and development of the business, Connecticut Grinding Co.

  • 1980s

    Continuous Growth

    Investment in modern CNC machinery throughout the 1980’s brought continuous growth to the saw blade and woodworking tool sharpening business and the eventual sale of the Povinelli’s traditional cutlery sharpening business.

  • 1985

    New Name & New Factory

    The continued expansion brought a new larger factory on Avon Street in Stratford and a new name, Connecticut Saw & Tool, to better reflect company’s entire focus on industrial tooling.

  • 2014-2025

    Acquisitions

    In 2014 Connecticut Saw & Tool acquired Third Avenue Grinding Service of Brooklyn, New York. Third Avenue Grinding Service was founded in 1914. Then in 2017 American Sharpening Service of Warwick, RI was acquired, which had been operating since 1983. In 2020, two more companies were acquired: Northeast Saw & Carbide Tool Co. of Manchester, NH and Quality Saw & Knife of Babylon, NY. January of 2025 saw the expansion of profile knife grinding services and moulder tooling offerings with the acquisition of ILMA-US.

  • 2023-2024

    Expansion

    In 2023–2024, Connecticut Saw & Tool completed a multi-million-dollar expansion of its Stratford, Connecticut operations, doubling its grinding and manufacturing capacity. The expansion included the addition of a new building on Avon Street, featuring a dedicated SawStop showroom and demonstration center.

    Today, Connecticut Saw & Tool is operated by 5th generation family owner Dan Povinelli. The products and services Connecticut Saw & Tool provides its customers are highly regarded throughout their industry. And while the company is well positioned to continue it’s grow into the future with accounts across the United States and internationally, its owners and employees still maintain its long established small company family values.
